Giacomo Panozzo – for the Vide Study Group

Purpose:

The purpose of the study is to better understand the natural history of diffuse diabetic macular edema, and to compare it with the efficacy of simple vitrectomy.

Methods:

Patients will be recruited until September 2005, and will be followed for one year, using as main outcomes quantitative and qualitative analisys of macular function (VA by ETDRS charts, FA and OCT, microperimetry and hematochemical laboratory tests (creatininemia, Hb1c, microalbuminuria).

Results:

Patients with VA over 20/63 (ETDRS chart measured at two meters) will be followed without any therapy. Patients with VA below this value will be randomly assigned to follow up or to vitrectomy.

Conclusion:

This multicenter study will add some valuable insights on the real efficacy of vitrectomy for diabetic macular edema and on the natural course of the disease.

Take-home message:

The first international announcement of a new randomized multicenter study on vitrectomy for diabetic macular edema.
