To predict the changes in visual-acuity and macula after treatment by analyzing four bands, external limiting membrane(ELM), inner and outer segments(IS/OS), cone outer segment tips (COST), retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in central serous chorioretinopathy using optical coherence tomography (OCT) before and after treatment.


The retrospective study consisted of 31 eyes of 29 patients with central serous chorioretinopathy. The relation of the four bands of macula and visual-acuity were assessed by OCT before and after treatment in all of those eyes.


Out of the four bands analyzed, only the band 3 (COST) showed significant changes (p<0.05). From the 31 eyes tested, the Band 3 (COST) disappeared in ten eyes, eleven eyes didn’t recover from the Band 3 (COST), six eyes showed no change, while four eyes developed the Band 3 (COST) after originally showing no signs. Furthermore, Out of the ten eyes which band three (COST) disappeared from, 70% had a defect band 4 (RPE) before treatment. Among the eyes which didn’t recover from the Band 3 (COST), 45% had this defect. 25% of the eyes which recovered from band 3 (COST), had a defect band 4 (RPE) before treatment. While the eyes which showed no change in the third band, showed no signs of defect band 4 (RPE) before treatment. In relation to the band 3 (COST) and visual-acuity, 5 out of the 21 eyes which disappeared or didn’t recover from band 3 (COST), the visual-acuity became worse. Whereas, in the cases which recovered or showed no changes from the band 3 (COST), the visual-acui ty remained the same.


When comparing the before and after treatment in central serous chorioretinopathy, statistically, the changing of band 3 (COST), was related with visual-acuity whether or not the band 4 (RPE) was intact. In conclusion, the recovery or sustaining of the band 3 (COST) and the existence of band 4 (RPE) before treatment are considered helpful in predicting the improvement of visual-acuity.
