Advantages:

Treatment of recurrent retinal detachments with inferior reproliferation has been successfully treated in nine consecutive patients with a combination of Silicone Oil and Perfluoron.

Methods:

After standard vitrectomy, membrane stripping, subretinal membrane resection and laser photocoagulation 1cc of Perfluoron is left in the eye and the remainder of the vitreous cavity is filled with Silicone Oil.

Effectiveness / Safety:

The retina was initially reattached in all nine patients. The oil/PFO combination was removed in 4 – 6 weeks without incident. The detachments have re-occurred in 2 patients but the remaining seven have stayed attached. For all follow-up was at least 6 months.
