Advantages:

The optimal surgical strategy to treat posterior retinal detachment in high myopia has not yet been established. The authors think that surgery should be tailored based on the axial length and the shape of the posterior staphyloma.

Methods:

The charts of 28 high myopic eyes with posterior retinal detachment and macular hole were reviewed. Vitrectomy, posterior vitreous cortex removal with triamcinolone and ILM peeling were performed. Twelve eyes were tamponaded with silicone oil 1000 Cs. and 17 eyes were tamponaded with heavy silicone oil (Densiron).

Effectiveness / Safety:

In the silicone oil 1000 Cs group 91.6% (11/12) were successfully attached with one surgery and 100% with two surgeries. Two eyes (16.6%) needed further surgery for redetachment within a few months. In the Densiron group, 93.7% (15/16) were successfully attached with one surgery and 100% with two surgeries. Six eyes redetached (37.5%) within a few months. Prognostic factors are studied and presented.
