Purpose:

To present two patients with ARN who were treated with pars plana vitrectomy.

Material and methods:

ARN was diagnosed in a 63-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman. The disease was bilateral in one case. Diagnosis was based on the clinical picture consistent with standard diagnostic criteria for the ARN and on the targeted laboratory tests.

Results:

IgM and IgG antibodies against Varicella-Zoster virus were detected in acute and convalescent sera. Patients were treated with systemic acyclovir and pars plana vitrectomy. Visual acuity improved in both cases.

Conclusion:

Pars plana vitrectomy combined with antiviral therapy may improve prognosis in patients with ARN.
