Retinal Microvascular Characteristics in Eyes with Idiopathic Epiretinal Membrane by Sabahattin Sul, Aylin Karalezli, Turkey

Purpose:
To evaluate the microvascular structure in the macula with optical coherence tomography angiography in eyes with idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM).

Methods:
60 eyes of 30 patients were included in this study. Fellow eyes (30 eyes) had no ocular pathology and used as control group. 6mm×6mm OCTA scans centered on fovea were used to determine microvascular structure. Superior and deep vascular densities (SVD and DVD) at fovea, parafovea and foveal avascular zone area measurements were evaluated in both eyes with iERM and fellow eyes and outcomes were compared. In addition, correlation between microvascular structure and visual acuity was evaluated.

Results:
FAZ area was 156±9.7 µm2 in iERM group and 334±8.3 µm2 in control group (p<0.001). Foveal SVD and DVD were significantly higher in eyes with iERM than fellow eyes. Parafoveal SVD and DVD were significantly lower in eyes with iERM than fellow eyes. Visual acuiy had a positive correlation with FAZ area (r=0.787,p<0.001) and parafoveal SVD (r=0.692,p<0.001) and DVD (r=0.543, p<0.001), negative correlation with foveal SVD (r=-0.721, p<0.001) and DVD (r=-0.591, p=0.004).

Discussion:
A marked foveal and parafoveal microvascular changes were observed in the eyes with iERM compared to the control eyes. Visual acuity was more affected in eyes with more pronounced microvascular changes.
