RON offers dramatically better anatomic and functional results as compared to non-surgical procedures provided that the following criteria are used: – proper patient selection – early intervention – ILM peeling.

Early vitrectomy associated with RON and ILM peeling. 19 patients treated with a 2-year mean follow-up.

Effectiveness / Safety:

No major complications detected. Anatomic improvement begins only a few days post-op. Visual acuity improves dramatically if procedure is carried out before macular ischemia sets in.

Take home message:

In severe CRVO where anatomic criteria are met, RON should be carried out as soon as possible.
