Photodynamic therapy represents a safe and efficient procedure for the treatment of retinal angiomas in children, by the selective occlusion of vascular lesions, without damaging adjacent retinal structures.

The authors describe their experience in the treatment of five cases of von Hippel Lindau disease; patients present the age between 5 and 9 years; the children were treated with laser therapy and photodinamic therapy.

Effectiveness / Safety:

Photodynamic therapy represents in children a selective treatment of intraocular angiomatous lesions, with documented regression of choroidal hemangiomas and visual acuity improvement.

Take home message:

Other treatments like cryotherapy or radiotherapy can cause additional functional damage, depending on the location of the angioma.
