Innovative molecular design for a new generation of silicone oils – high resistance against emulsification with improved injectability in small gauge ppV.

Although Silicone oils have been in clinical use for 50 years, in vitro testing methods simulating the eye’s physics came into practice only shortly. These new testing methods are able to quantify emulsification.

Testing conventional silicone oils, high viscous silicone oil with a viscosity of 5,000 cst showed the best resistance against emulsification but poor injection times. Today’s standard is the small gauge vitrecomy in a 23 or 25 gauge setup. To meet both demands, a high resistance against emulsification as well as a better injectability compared to 5,000 cst oils was the aim of this development of a new generation of silicone oils.

The innovative composition of silicone oil meets these divergent demands. For the first time, the benchmark of 5,000 cst oil in regards of the resistance against emulsification could be improved significantly. As a first result, this new oil provides the lowest in vitro risk of emulsification. A further relevant progress was made due to a new molecular design which shows a different and better viscoelasticity. A second result is a reduced extensional viscosity under pressure what brings a significantly reduced injection time compared to standard 5,000 cst silicone oils.
