To demonstrate the efficacy of choriocapillaris repair surgery by vortex vein occlusion on various forms of AMD.

Several forms of AMD were treated surgically by vortex vein occlusion and were followed form March 2002 to March 2006. The basis of this technique is that AMD is at least partly related to heterogeneous degeneration of the choriocapillaris induced by atherosclerosis. Vortex vein occlusion is designed to restore choriocapillaris tone. the results of this surgery we demonstrated by OCT and repeated fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography using a Heidelberg SLO. The course of visual acuity and thepatient’s subjective comfort are reported.

Regression of several types of drusen was obtained as well as lasting control of early supercicial or deep occult neovascular forms or wet AMD. A concomitant improvement of visual acuity was observed in line with these anatomical results.

The efficacy of this technique once again suggests the important role played by atheroscle.
