Advantages:

Exudative AMD may benefit from different surgical approaches, when the standard of care is not successful. The efficacy of macular translocation or autologous RPE and choroid transplantation is linked to specific prognostic factors. The knowledge of the prognostic factors may guide the indications for surgery.

Methods:

A series of eyes which underwent macular translocation or autologous RPE and choroid transplantation were retrospectively studied. The change of postoperative visual acuity was correlated to multiple preoperative factors observable by OCT. Differences in the surgical strategies were studied with OCT and angiography.

Results:

The preoperative integrity of the ISOS was the key prognostic factor. The postoperative choroidal vascularization could explain some different results between the two techniques.

Take home message:

Know what to look at on the OCT before taking the patient to surgery.
