In case of zonulo-capsular disruption (zonular defect, artisan IOL, aphakia, etc.), retinal tamponading agents could invade the anterior chamber during silicone oil injection or could flatten an artisan IOL against the cornea during gas exchange.

The anterior chamber is filled completely with a dispersive visco-elastic substance.

Tamponading agents can be kept out of the anterior chamber without suffering uncontrollable postoperative raised intra-ocular pressure.
