Advantages:

To compare the visual and anatomical outcomes and complications of 4 surgical techniques in the management of pseudopkakic and aphakic retinal detachment (PARD).

Methods:

In a multicenter clinical trial, 204 eyes with PARD and PVR grade B or less were randomly assigned to one of the 4 treatment groups: 1) scleral buckling (SB) ,2)vitrectomy without band, 3) vitrectomy with encircling band and 4)TA assisted vitrectomy. Patients were followed for one year.

Effectiveness / Safety:

There were no statistically significant differences among the 4 treatment groups in terms of outcomes and complications.

Take home message:

SB, TA assisted vitrectomy, vitrectomy alone and vitrectomy with band have comparable results in pseudophakic and aphakic retinal detachment.
