ABSTRACT

Purpose:

To determinethe size of the foveal avascular zone and of superotemporal parafoveal ischemic zone by optical coherence tomography angiography (A-OCT) before and after surgery in a single case of tractional diabetic macular edema (T-DME).

Methods:

Parsplana vitrectomy was performed with internal limiting membrane peeling. The macular retinal vasculature was examined by A-OCT (Topcon) and the area of the foveal avascular zone and of the superotemporal parafoveal ischemic zone was determined before and at 1 and 3 months after surgery. The central foveal thickness was measured to determine the efficacy of the surgical procedure.

 

Results:

The area of foveal avascular zone and the central foveal thickness was reduced postoperatively. The superotemporal parafoveal ischemic zone remained unchanged.

Conclusions:

Thedecrease in foveal avascular zone and the decrease in central foveal thickness after macular surgery suggests the absence of any iatrogenic damage. We think that this result could also be influenced by the regression of parafoveal cysts.
