ABSTRACT

Background:

Fundus imaging is very important for screening of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Available methods need pupil dilatation. Drugs used for pupil dilatation have many side effect from necrotizing enterocolitis to myoclonic seizures. Therefore there is a need for wide angle fundus imaging without pupil dilatation in premature babies.

Purpose:

To describe new wide angle fundus imaging method by using transpalpebral illumination and to compare this method with currently available device (Ret Cam Shuttle) in premature babies.

Method:

Ten consecutive premature babies were included in this study. Fundus of these babies were first evaluated by using new method without pupil dilatation. Zone and degree of ROP were recorded in each quadrant. After pupil dilatation fundus of babies were evaluated again with RETCAM shuttle. Comparison of findings were made.

Result:

Five of the patients were girl. All qudrant of all patients could be evaluated by this new metod. All finding were perfectly matched.

Conclusion:

This study gave us promising result to obtain wide angle fundus images of premature babies without pupil dilatation by using transpalpebral illumination.
